To South Peak Owners, from Pat Bahr, General Manager of South Peak Resort

Dear South Peak Resort Owners,

Many thanks to Governor Lynch, Loon management, all contractors and utility company employees who have made such quick progress, working through nights, on repairs this past week. The following is a summary of the current status of area, Loon and South Peak repairs and traffic flow.

Kancamagus Highway opens Sunday in time for the Highland Games and fall foliage!

Concerning Loon International Bridge repairs:

  • The temporary pedestrian bridge to Loon from Route 112 is in place. Loon and Mountain Club employees, bicycles and pedestrians will access their property over that bridge starting this weekend.
  • The temporary pedestrian bridge will be removed beginning about September 20th with the goal to have it down by October 1st.
  • During the first few weeks of October, the 100 foot section of the bridge that collapsed will be removed.
  • The temporary, vehicular Acrow bridge will then be constructed with the intent to have it in place by November 18th. This two lane bridge will be used throughout ski season for access to Loon. Removal of this bridge and reconstruction of the permanent bridge to Loon should begin around May 1, 2012.

Traffic flow at South Peak:

  • Trucks are being directed over South Peak Road to reduce flow on Crooked Mountain Road. We will upgrade South Peak Road beginning next week to allow all vehicles to use that road during repairs to the 3 sided bridge on Crooked Mountain Road west of Pemi Base Camp.
  • Loon is staffing our roads on weekends and peak periods to direct traffic and monitor speed.
  • Extra 20 mph signs are posted along Crooked Mountain Road.

Highland Games will occur in same manner as previous years except that two buses for the handicapped will go through South Peak.

Reminders:

  • JE Henry trail is closed until repairs are made.
  • No parking along South Peak Resort roadsides – towing is being enforced.

We are thankful for such a great working relationship with Loon and we all appreciate your patience and understanding. Please email me if you have any questions and I will respond as soon as possible.

Best Regards,

Pat Bahr

South Peak Resort—“That’s What I Call Living, Aunt Polly!”

South Peak Resort, New Hampshire Optimism, and Pollyanna
One doesn’t wander around the neighboring town of Littleton, New Hampshire long before realizing it was once home to Eleanor H. Porter, author of the classic children’s novel “Pollyanna.” A statue of Pollyanna, arms flung wide, stands in front of the Littleton Library and Littleton hosts “The Official Pollyanna Glad Day” festival every summer.

So who’s Pollyanna anyway?

Pollyanna is the heroine of the classic children’s novel of the same name. The orphan of missionary parents, she was sent to live with her distant and painfully stern Aunt Polly. Though she weathered much difficulty in her young life, Pollyanna managed to find something bright and wonderful in every situation; even when no one else could see her brighter view. As is often the case for orphans (especially in classic literature), great creativity is needed to survive their tragic circumstances. Pollyanna’s choice of perspective and attitude positioned her to see the good in everyone and treat them accordingly. She was zealous and persistent in her efforts, and “BY GOLLY AUNT POLLY” she was charming! In due time even the most miserable resident of Beldingsville, VT welcomed her vision and began to embody her expectations.

Pollyanna was the creation of Eleanor H. Porter, born on December 19, 1868, in Littleton, New Hampshire. Eleanor attended Littleton schools and later went to The New England Conservatory of Music where she studied voice and was part of the Cambridge Choral Society. Her most famous book, Pollyanna, was published in 1913. It topped the best seller list for two years, was translated into 12 languages, and by 1920, had been printed 47 times. Eleanor said of Pollyanna, “My relationship with ‘Pollyanna’ is a very personal one, because Pollyanna got me through my childhood.”

The name Pollyanna is deeply embedded in our culture. Such was the intensity of Pollyanna’s irrepressible optimism that she became known as “The Glad Girl” and “Glad Clubs” sprang up around the country. One could even play the “Glad Game.” Webster and Oxford dictionaries define Pollyanna as a person characterized by irrepressible optimism and a tendency to find good in everything, but popular usage of the term “Pollyannaish” is pejorative and symbolizes someone who is too naïve, blind to reality, and exhibiting excessive optimism. In fact, it’s just not cool to be “Pollyannaish.”

The story of Pollyanna has been filmed several times. Notable adaptations have been a silent version, starring Mary Pickford, and a Walt Disney film released in 1960 starring English actress Hayley Mills in the title role. I remember the vintage Disney version and can still hear the gleeful voice of Hayley Mills commanding those around her to see things her way.

So what does South Peak Resort have to do with Pollyanna?
Consider this quote from Pollyanna:

“Aunt Polly, you haven’t left me any time at all just to-to live…I mean living-doing the things you want to do: playing outdoors, reading (to myself, of course), climbing hills, talking to Mr. Tom in the garden, and Nancy, and finding out all about the houses and the people and everything everywhere all through the perfectly lovely streets I came through yesterday. That’s what I call living, Aunt Polly. Just breathing isn’t living!”

Hurricane Irene- Kind to South Peak Resort

Hurricane Irene, as hurricanes go, was kind to South Peak Resort, despite some power outages. The early reports this morning from Pat Bahr, GM at South Peak, reveal that despite wind gusts there were no trees down nor was there damage to any home or building on the property. The Pemi River, on the property's north border, crested at twenty-three feet but is receding quickly. South Peak Resort on Loon Mountain fared well in foul weather. Home Owner Hike & NCCA Theatre Night

It's been a great summer so far, and we would like to share some photos from two recent South Peak Resort events! On June 25th, we hiked Indian Head trail up Mount Pemigewasset with Jerry Rivers, a local guide with a passion for leading hiking and nature enthusiasts through the many trails this area has to offer. It was such a fun day - here are a few pictures from our trek on the Indian Head Trail up Mount Pemigewasset:
The NCCA Papermill Theatre graciously hosted a wonderful theatre night for South Peak owners on July 2nd. Not only did we have a fantastic barbecue, but we laughed the night away while viewing, "I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change," a terrific performance by the Papermill's 2011 company! As a playbill sponsor for the Papermill, South Peak Resort is delighted to see that the construction of the Jean's Playhouse is coming along nicely. If you wish to support the completion of this outstanding new facility, which also boasts a spectacular Children's Theatre, please visit http://www.papermilltheatre.org/.

Welcome, Spring!

The winter season was amazing, but it's time to hang up the skis, snowboards, and snowshoes -- Spring weather is finally here! Lincoln is alive with a variety of birds, the steady cheeping of Peepers throughout the night, the roaring of the Pemigewassett River, and occasional rumbling thunder storms. The past few days have been very nice, with temperatures approaching the mid-70s. Most of the snow has melted throughout the South Peak Resort property, and green grass, daffodils and the budding trees are simply gorgeous.

South Peak Resort Demo Day - A Huge Hit!

Set up began at the South Peak Resort Warming Hut around 7:30 in the morning that day to gray skies and flurries. We could see the reps from the ski companies setting up near the Pemigewassett Base Camp. After a few minutes everyone enjoyed the continental breakfast that was available in the Hut!

Registration started at 8am. One by one our South Peak owners arrived, eager to sign up for the Demo Day Activities! The ski reps set them up with skis of their choice, and off they went. (For those that are unfamiliar with the South Mountain side of Loon Mountain, it features the following runs: Boom Run, Ripsaw, Undercut, Cruiser and Escape Route. These runs are a mix of blue, black diamond and double black diamond, which is perfect for trying out different types of skis. It allowed the demo-ers to ski soley on South Mountain if they so wished).

The BBQ was delicious, to say the least. The skies, by that time, were cloudless, and the sun shone down on the Hut's deck while everyone enjoyed burgers, veggie burgers, hot dogs, grilled chicken, chips, pickles, you name it! Everyone had tons of fun taking a break from demo-ing and getting together to share a few good laughs and discuss skis.

Finally, it was time for the day to wind down. Many joined us at the South Peak info office to indulge in a fun Apres Ski social, compared notes on the new 2012 skis and learned more about South Peak Resort on Loon Mountain's latest developments and real estate information.

It truly was a fantastic day, all compliments of Terramesa Resorts. We had a great time and we know our owners and their guests did, too. Many thanks go out to Loon Mountain Sports and all Loon staff that made the day a huge success!!

The New England Disabled Sports Center was dedicated to Robert Harney, MD at the event. The facility will now be known as the Dr. Bob Harney Adaptive Sports Center. A founder and past President of NEDS, Dr. Bob is a world reknowned leader in the adaptive sports industry.
